Jim Knorr

The Upstate Chapter of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation is partnering with Allen Arms Indoor Shooting Range in Greenville to offer the James L. Knorr Youth Shooting Program.

The goal of the program is to educate Greenville-area youth ages 9 to 18 on the safe, proper and legal use of firearms through the National Rifle Association's basic rifle course.

The course will be offered at no cost to the participants and includes gun usage, ammunition, targets, eye and ear protection, course study materials and awards.
The 16-hour course will be held on Monday nights, meeting for two hours per night for eight weeks. Space will be limited, although organizers hope to offer the class up to four or five times each year. Preregistration is required. A startup date will be announced soon.

The program is dedicated to the memory of Knorr, a former member of the Upstate Chapter of the RMEF who died in 2007. “While the conservation of wildlife habitat is the core mission of the RMEF, it is also involved in a number of other projects such as the reintroduction of elk back into their native habitat, conservation education, and the preservation of our wildlife heritage,” said Dr. Carl Walsh of Easley, Regional Chair for the Eastern Division of the RMEF. “Partnering with Allen Arms allows the RMEF to introduce youth to the shooting sports as a first step in introducing them to their wildlife heritage.

“It also is most appropriate that this program be named in honor of Jim Knorr, as he was a sportsman dedicated to the shooting sports and a valued member of the Upstate Chapter.
